Guarantees of Origin Pricing

The guarantee of origin price is volatile and hard to monitor.  GOs are priced differently depending on how the attributes on the specific GO are viewed in the open market. Combinations of technologies, origin, etc are priced vastly different.

Quick facts

What is an Guarantee of Origin?

Guarantees of Origin is an Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC) that documents how and where electricity is produced. It’s used to label electricity with attributes such as production location, date, and technology.

How does guarantees of origin work?

For each one-megawatt hour of renewable electricity produced a GO is generated. A GO stays valid for 12 months from its production date, in this period it can be bought and sold and is not real-time matched to the produced electricity.

Guarantees of origin for producers and consumers

Energy producers

For qualifying producers, GOs are an asset they get from producing clean renewable energy. GOs can be sold on the open market and can therefore provide extra revenue.

Energy consumers

“Our company runs on 100% renewable wind energy”. A GO certificate documents such claims.

Energy consumers

As a buyer of GOs, it gives energy consumers an option to claim cleaner energy and any benefits that comes along with that.

What’s the purpose of GOs?

Energy, when produced is put onto a shared electricity grid. The source of this energy from the grid is indistinguishable for an end-user. A mix of renewable energy and non-renewable energy is therefore delivered.

Purpose of GOs

  • A company that wants a green profile and proves a lower carbon footprint wants to use renewable energy.
  • This is where the GO comes in.
  • Buying a GO gives you a claim for the renewable energy it documents.
Wind farm generates GO

A wind farm generates GO by producing electricity. A consumer, in this case, Consumer B, buys enough GO to cover the energy spent. Consumer B can now claim to have used only wind energy. The wind farm owners gained extra revenue by selling the GO.

I.E Company B wants a green profile where all energy used is produced by wind. They can then buy GO with wind production. Any GO from within 12 months is valid, beyond that they expire and they can not be used to claim a renewable source.
